The six members of the City Council shown above are elected at large. Council members serve staggered four-year terms on a part time basis. The Mayor serves four year terms. Elections in the City of Hurricane are non-partisan. The Mayor presides at Council meetings and votes only in the event of a tie vote.

Mayor
The Mayor is the Chief Executive Officer of the City. His statutory responsibilities include:
- Appointment of the City Recorder and City Treasurer
- Conducting City Council meetings
- General supervision of the Police and Fire departments
- Making appointments to all official city boards and commissions, with the advice and consent of the City Council
- City Government

City Council
It is the responsibility of the City Council to establish the overall policy direction for the City. This is done by:
- Amending and adopting ordinances
- Adopting the budget
- Providing administrative oversight of the Mayor and City Manager
